When it comes to early childhood education, a thoughtfully designed curriculum is important. It lays the foundation for a child’s lifelong learning journey. My early childhood pre-service students are curious about various curriculum models… What is the Montessori approach and who was this “Reggio Emilio” guy 🙂

Early childhood curriculum models or approaches have unique qualities and challenges. Understanding these approaches is like having a toolkit, empowering educators to choose the best fit for their young learners.

The Reggio Emilia Approach 🌱

Key Theorist/Origins: The Reggio Emilia Approach originated in Italy in the aftermath of World War II, with the pioneering work of Loris Malaguzzi, a prominent psychologist.

3 Key Ideas:

  1. Child as Capable and Curious: This approach regards children as naturally curious and competent, actively engaging with the world. Children have rights and are citizens from birth.
  2. Collaboration: It places a strong emphasis on collaboration among teachers, children, and parents, fostering a sense of community.
  3. Documentation: Extensive documentation of children’s learning processes through art, photographs, and discussions.

Role of the Teacher: Teachers in this model are seen as co-learners, observing children closely and guiding their explorations. They document children’s progress, adding to the knowledge pool. The teacher is a researcher, a reflective practitioner, and a pedagogista. The unique position in Reggio Emilia schools is aterlierista, who is a studio art teacher.

Learning Perspective: Learning is viewed as a social process. Children learn through interactions with others and their environment.

Unique Quality: Extensive use of visual and written documentation, making learning visible.

Challenge: Requires skilled educators who can effectively facilitate child-led learning. Typically, educators go to Reggio Emilia to learn some important ideas and get immersion via Reggio Children organisation.

Montessori Education 🧒

Key Theorist/Origins: Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, developed the Montessori method in the early 20th century.

3 Key Ideas:

  1. Child-Led Learning: Children choose their activities, promoting autonomy and decision-making.
  2. Prepared Environment: Classrooms are thoughtfully designed with materials that encourage exploration and independence.
  3. Self-Correction: Montessori materials are designed for self-correction, allowing children to learn from their mistakes.

Role of the Teacher: Montessori teachers act as guides, observing children’s interests and facilitating their choices.

Learning Perspective: Learning is a self-driven, hands-on process. Children learn through exploration and discovery

Unique Quality: The Montessori materials and the prepared environment are distinctive features. You will recognise Montessori classrooms in any country.

Challenge: Requires a well-prepared environment and specialised Montessori-trained teachers (Montessori diploma). The education and training in Australia are quite expensive, but you can do self-paced modules online or face-to-face.

Symbolic Resource: The iconic Montessori materials like the Pink Tower and the Golden Beads.

Froebel Approach

Key Theorist or Origins: The Froebel approach is based on the ideas of Friedrich Froebel, a German educator who founded the concept of kindergarten in the early 19th century. He believed that early childhood was a crucial period for a child’s development, and he developed a curriculum that emphasized play, creativity, and the natural world.

3 Key Ideas:

  1. Play-Based Learning: Froebel believed that play was the primary way young children learned about the world. He developed a series of gifts and occupations, such as wooden blocks and geometric shapes, to encourage hands-on, creative play.
  2. Unity of Nature: Froebel emphasized the interconnectedness of all things in nature. He believed that by exploring natural materials and activities like gardening and outdoor exploration, children could develop a sense of harmony with the natural world.
  3. Education as Nurturing: Froebel viewed teachers as nurturing guides who supported children’s natural development. He advocated for a warm and supportive classroom environment where children felt safe to explore and express themselves.

Role of the Teacher: In the Froebel approach, teachers act as facilitators and guides rather than instructors. They observe children’s play, provide materials for exploration, and offer gentle guidance when needed. Teachers create a nurturing and structured environment that encourages creativity and self-expression.

View of Learning: Learning in the Froebel approach is viewed as an active and hands-on process. Children learn through play, exploration, and interaction with their environment. This approach values the development of social and emotional skills, as well as intellectual growth.

Unique Quality: The Froebel approach is known for its focus on structured play, which includes the use of educational materials like Froebel’s gifts and occupations. These materials are designed to stimulate a child’s imagination and promote the understanding of mathematical and spatial concepts through play.

Challenge: One challenge of the Froebel approach is ensuring that teachers are skilled in creating a rich and stimulating play environment. Additionally, it may require careful planning to align play-based activities with educational goals.

Symbolic Resource: The symbolic resource that symbolises the Froebel approach could be the set of “Froebel’s Gifts,” which consists of wooden blocks and geometric shapes that encourage creative and mathematical exploration through play.

What is place-based pedagogy?

WHAT IS PLACE-BASED PEDAGOGY?

According to Miri Yemini at al. (2023), place-based education (PBE) is a pedagogical approach that emphasises the connection between a learning process and the physical place in which educators and children are located. It incorporates the meanings and experiences of place in teaching and learning, which can extend beyond the walls of the preschool or early childhood centre.

Place-based pedagogy fosters active learning and can be simply explained as an educational approach that is locally driven, community-based, or ecologically focused.

Place-based pedagogy existed long before it became a trend (see Dewey and Froebel approaches). The outbreak of COVID-19, attention to lack of nature exposure and children’s health and mental issues, forced the rapid adoption of alternative learning environments, including teaching and learning outdoors and learning from home.

This approach is rooted in research and aligns with the principles of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) in the Australian context. Here’s a closer look at place-based pedagogy in ECEC based on research and the EYLF:

  1. Connection to the Local Environment: Place-based pedagogy emphasizes the importance of connecting children to their immediate surroundings, such as the local community, natural environment, and cultural heritage. This approach recognizes that learning is most meaningful when it occurs in the context of the child’s everyday life.
  2. Holistic Learning: Place-based pedagogy aligns with the holistic view of children’s development advocated by the EYLF. It acknowledges that children are capable and competent learners who actively engage with their environment. Learning is not limited to traditional classroom settings but extends to the world outside.
  3. Respect for Diversity: The EYLF emphasizes the importance of recognizing and respecting the diversity of children and their families. Place-based pedagogy encourages educators to explore and celebrate the cultural, linguistic, and social diversity present within the local community, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion.
  4. Active Learning: Research has shown that children learn best through active, hands-on experiences. Place-based pedagogy encourages children to explore, investigate, and problem-solve within their local environment. This approach aligns with research on constructivism and experiential learning.
  5. Collaborative Learning: Both research and the EYLF promote collaborative learning experiences. Place-based pedagogy often involves collaboration between educators, children, families, and the wider community. This collaborative approach enriches children’s learning experiences and connects them with real-world contexts.
  6. Sustainability and Environmental Awareness: Place-based pedagogy can also promote sustainability and environmental awareness. Children learn about the natural world and the importance of caring for it within their local context. This aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainability in early childhood education.

According to the EYLF 2.0, Place-based pedagogy refers to an
understanding that educators knowledge of the setting or context will influence how educators plan and practice. This pedagogical approach is particularly important to Aboriginal and Torres Islander peoples and their connection to land and places should be explored with local Elders and community members in culturally responsive ways.

In many areas, localised Aboriginal culture is
closely aligned to nature and the environment, with
particular emphasis on cycles and patterns and
the effect each has on the other. It is based on an
undeniable link to the land, language and culture.7
These links also affect perspectives. For example,
close ties to Country by some Aboriginal cultural
groups affect the way the land is perceived and
treated; not as a commodity or resource, but as
an extension of the group and something to be
nurtured.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE IN PRACTICE?

  • Know your place, community and Country
  • Created opportunities for children to explore and interact with the local natural environment. This could include visits to nearby parks, forests, rivers, or other natural settings where they can connect with nature firsthand.

Nature and community are both powerful teachers

  • Educators would begin by acknowledging and respecting the local Aboriginal culture, including the connection to the land, language, and culture. This acknowledgment may involve traditional Welcome to Country ceremonies or other culturally appropriate practices, performed by Elders.
  • Aboriginal culture often places a significant emphasis on storytelling and oral tradition. Educators might incorporate traditional stories, songs, and narratives that convey the interconnectedness of the land, language, and culture into the curriculum. Elders or community members may be invited to share their stories and knowledge with the children.
  • Children would be encouraged to observe and explore the cycles and patterns in the natural world, such as seasons, weather, plant growth, and animal behaviors. This aligns with the Aboriginal perspective, which often recognizes the deep connections between these natural elements. For example, you can find our more about local peoples’ seasons (I use this Bunurong 6 seasons)
  • Children would be taught to view the land not as a commodity but as an extension of the community and something to be cared for and nurtured. Activities may include planting and tending to native plants, cleaning up litter, and participating in land conservation efforts.
  • Outdoor learning spaces are a feature of Australian learning environments. They offer a vast array of possibilities for physical activity and learning experiences not available indoors. Access to play spaces in natural environments may include plants, trees, edible gardens, open spaces, sand, rocks, mud, water and other elements from nature. These and other outdoor spaces invite open-ended play and interactions, physically active play and games,spontaneity, risk-taking, exploration, discovery and connection with nature. They foster an appreciation of the natural world and the interdependence between people, animals, plants, lands and waters providing opportunities for children to engage with all concepts of sustainability through environmental education (EYLF, DET, 2022, p. 23).

EASY TO SET UP STEM experiences

Creating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) play spaces and learning experiences for young children (ages 0-5) involves providing age-appropriate activities that encourage exploration, creativity, and the development of foundational skills. Here are some ideas tailored specifically for this age group:

Sensory Exploration: Set up sensory stations with materials like water, sand, clay, and various textured objects. Allow children to touch, feel, and manipulate these materials to develop their sensory and motor skills. My favourite experiences include frozen water – ice, jelly and kinetic sand.

Building Blocks: Provide soft, large building blocks or foam shapes that toddlers can stack, arrange, and knock down. This promotes basic engineering and spatial skills. In addition to blocks, use simple ramps like in the picture below to learn about gravity, inertia, speed and acceleration.

Nature Discovery: Create an outdoor garden or nature exploration area where young children can observe plants, insects, and animals. This introduces them to basic concepts of biology and ecology.

Artistic Expression: Offer age-appropriate art supplies such as finger paints, nontoxic clay, and large crayons. Encourage children to create art that incorporates math and geometry through shapes and colours. Art also encourages learning about media and how materials mix and interact with each other.

Math Play: Use toys like stacking rings, shape sorters, and counting games to introduce basic math concepts like counting, sorting, and shape recognition.

Rocks and cards

Storytelling and Literacy: Set up a cozy reading corner with a variety of books that incorporate STEM/STEAM themes. Encourage children to ask questions and make connections between stories and real-life experiences.

Simple Science Experiments: Conduct safe and easy science experiments like mixing colours with water, exploring buoyancy with objects that float and sink, or observing plant growth. My favourite experiences are below.

Music and Sound Exploration: Provide musical instruments and objects that make different sounds. This helps children develop an understanding of sound waves and basic physics.

Outdoor Play and Physical Activity: Design outdoor play spaces with climbing structures, tunnels, and balance beams. Physical activity contributes to the development of gross motor skills.

Technology Exploration: Offer age-appropriate educational apps and interactive toys that introduce basic technology concepts. These can include simple puzzles, shape recognition games, or apps that involve cause-and-effect interactions.
