How knowing about 5 domains of self-regulation can help you support children better.

🚸 Why do some children thrive while others struggle with emotions & focus?

The secret? Self-regulation. 🎯 It’s more than just managing emotions—it shapes learning, behavior & success.

The five domains of self-regulation in early childhood education, based on Dr. Stuart Shanker’s Self-Reg Framework, are:

1️⃣ Biological Regulation – Managing energy levels, arousal, and stress responses (e.g., sleep, hunger, sensory sensitivities).
2️⃣ Emotional Regulation – Recognising, expressing, and managing emotions in appropriate ways.
3️⃣ Cognitive Regulation – Controlling attention, problem-solving, and impulse control (also known as executive function skills).
4️⃣ Social Regulation – Navigating interactions, understanding social cues, and responding appropriately to others.
5️⃣ Prosocial Regulation – Developing empathy, kindness, and moral reasoning to support cooperative behaviours.

Self-regulation isn’t just about “self-control”—it’s about understanding stressors and learning how to manage them effectively.
